Hi, my name is Richard.

After many years in hospitality management, I developed a passion for working with and coaching people of all ages and abilities to do their best in all situations. I was inspired to take the leap to become an instructor after a much respected older family member became an instructor in his later years which gave him a great deal of satisfaction.

In joining the AA Driving School, I wanted to share my skills in maintaining and improving safe driving habits on the roadways of NZ which we all share and enjoy. I enjoy coaching students prior to their restricted and full licence tests, and delivering constructive feedback which enables them to pass.

I’ve named my car Neddy, in honour of my late mother in law, Nedra Johnson, QSM. Neddy was a longtime Suzuki Swift driver, educationalist, strong advocate of women’s rights, supporter of the arts and numerous good causes and one of the nicest people you could ever meet. When she passed away in 2022 she bequeathed her Swift to Women’s Refuge.

You will find that I am patient; calm and give clear instructions in my lessons – I want to build your confidence in your driving skills so that you can gain some independence through driving.

I look forward to helping you in your learning to drive journey.

I have had the pleasure in engaging with Richard Norris as my driving instructor. I have driven with other instructors, but Richard is by far the best and my favourite. Richard is an incredibly patient and kind driving instructor. For example, he explains the road rules very well ensuring I understand what I need to know to be a safe and considerate driver. Even when I made errors, he never reprimanded me – he remained calm and gently explained what was required to address my mistakes to ensure I did not repeat them. Richard went over and beyond teaching me how to drive and to have a competent grasp of the road rules. For example, Richard was instrumental in guiding me to buy a car. He took time out to explain what to check prior to purchasing a car and the questions to ask the seller. Richard also explained what I need to regularly check to ensure my car is in tip top condition. I would highly recommend learning how to drive with Richard. Quite honestly, I do not think I would have passed and gained my full driver licence without Richard’s tutelage. He is an amazing instructor, highly professional and it has been an extremely positive experience driving and learning with him.
